Congratulations to all organizers; Greetings to all executives. I am happy indeed to be here, listening, seeing and being part of the effort towards developing activities in our temples, bringing harmony in our temples and addressing important questions like how could our ceremonies and rituals have symphony and similarity from temple to temple, and how could we create interest in the new generation towards our Hindu temples.

The vedic chant, shanti mantra from Kathopanishad, the famous sermon – “Om Sahanavavatu…” – is the only answer.

“We must work or serve the temple together

We must work or serve hard together

We should complete the project or task together

We should share the grace together and during the course we should not have any misunderstanding between us

We seek peace – physical, mental and eternal.”

Here is the first question – do we love to be together for all temple functions? Shruti says, “Dvevidyeveditavyaparachaivaapara cha”. For better management of temple all of us must learn two different subjects – one is management of the temple and second is management of SELF. Unfortunately we are the boss in temple and not the servant. No executive has interest in satsang, swadhyay, bhajan, kirtan, prayer or meditation. As long as we do not have essentially needed spirituality in all of us, NO TEMPLE can have harmony or can flourish.  We think we are executives, we have all rights over bossing everyone including the pujaris or the archakas of the temple. If executive shouts, bangs and gives most indecent treatment to pujaris, temples will remain domes of stone, wood, cement and marble. Nature of God is all love. Nature of God is Truth. Nature of God is all purity. Nature of God is total surrender! It is high time that we should ponder over the famous Vedic saying, “Samgacchadvam, samvadhattvam, samnomanaamsijanatam”. This “Sam” – togetherness is every essential.

Our saints were known as Surdas, Raidas, Kanakdas, Kabirdas, Tulsidas, Ramdas and so forth. Gurunanakji said, “I am your servant’s servant’sservant’s shoe’s dust”. The great Tyagaraja Swami said, “I am Your servant’s servant’s servant O Lord Rama”.

Hence let us be humble, be simple, be noble by keeping our egos off. Selfish motive for power and possession in executives is the greatest obstacle in the upliftment not only in the management of Hindu organization but in Hindu dharma itself. My Master Swami SivanandajiMaharaj said in his high pitched voice –

“Serenity, regularity, absence of vanity

Sincerity, simplicity, veracity

Equanimity, fixity, non-irritability

Adaptability, humility, tenacity

Integrity, nobility, magnanimity

Charity, generosity, purity –

Practise daily these eighteen ities

You will soon attain Immortality.

Brahman is the only real entity

Mr. So and So is a false non entity

You will abide in unity in diversity

Sri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram

Sri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram”

So, the first and foremost need for temple management is that managers should be sattvic in nature and not police officers. Let them be regular in all activities of the temple and not just for management meetings. Let them be servants of the temple and not the bosses.

Regarding cultivating interest in the youth, in our religion it is essential that parents should bring interest in them before they conceive them in the womb. If parents are religious, God-oriented it is not necessary to give special cultural training to youth. Unfortunately parents give birth to their progeny but not life. To give life, they must live the life. Life is not mere existence upon this earth as a burden, but as an asset and you will see that our next generation will be pillar, support and future force to protect Dharma.

This is Sri Swami Vivekanandaji’s 150th birth anniversary year. We cannot forget him. He said, “Tell the Truth boldly, whether it hurts or not. Never pander to weakness. If Truth is too much for intelligent people and sweeps them away, let them go; the sooner the better.”

So let us seek the Truth. Serve the community. Love the fellow beings. Be generous in sharing and giving; that alone can bring purification and strength to uphold the flag of Bharatavarsha, our beloved motherland and our great shelter – our dharma, the Hindu Dharma. Om Shantih!

Thank you very much for thy august presence. Thanks for thy time-sharing inspite of the program running an hour late. Thanks for your patience in hearing my cry of burning heart for the cause we all are here for. Om Shantih!

Please stand up; cover your head. Let us pray for our brothers and sisters who lost their lives in the unfortunate massacre in Gurudwara of Wisconsin.

“Sat namwahe Guru; Tu Thakur tum peardas”

Please sit down. Let us honor Sri Umesh Shukla, President HMEC for his wonderful seva.

Om Shantih! Shantih! Shanti
