This is that Atman even with regard to the letters (of the word OM); it is the Omkara with its parts. The quarters are the parts, and the parts the quarters. The parts of Om are "A," "U" and "M".
In the previous Mantras the Atman has been described from the viewpoint of the states of waking, dream, sleep and Turiya. The same Atman is described from the viewpoint of the sound OM in the following Mantras. This will help meditation on Om. Om is analyzed into its constituent sound elements 'A,' 'U' and 'M' in order to identify them with the states of waking, dream and sleep. Those which constitute the quarters of the Atman are the letters of AUM, "A", "U" and "M".
