Glory of Bhagvad Gita by Swami Sivananda
 Gita Jayanti  (December 8, 2008 )

"The Gita is the cream of the Vedas. It is the essence of the soul-elevating Upanishads. It is a universal scripture applicable to people of all temperaments and for all times. It is a wonderful book with sublime thoughts and practical instructions on Yoga, devotion, Vedanta and action. It is a marvelous book, profound in thought and sublime in heights of vision. It brings peace and solace to souls that are afflicted by the three fires of mortal existence, namely, afflictions caused by one’s own body, those caused by beings around one, and those caused by the gods."

"The Gita is not merely a book or just a scripture. It is a living voice carrying an eternally indispensable and vital message to mankind. Its verses embody words of wisdom coming from the infinite ocean of knowledge, the Absolute Itself."

"The Gita is a source of power and wisdom. It strengthens you when you are weak, and inspires you when you feel
dejected and feeble. It teaches you to embrace righteousness and to resist unrighteousness." - Swami Sivananda << More>>

Quotes on Bhagvad Gita

"Gita Mahatmaya"

Though engaged in the performance of worldly duties, one who is regular in the study of the Gita becomes free. He is the happy man in this world. He is not bound by Karma.

Just as the water stains not the lotus leaf, even so sins do not taint him who is regular in the recitation of the Gita

All the sacred centers of pilgrimage, like Prayag and other places, dwell in that place where the Gita is kept, and where the Gita is read.

Help comes quickly where the Gita is recited and, O Earth, I ever dwell where it is read, heard, taught and contemplated upon!

It was spoken by the blessed Lord Krishna, the all-knowing, through His own mouth, to Arjuna. It contains the essence of the Vedas—the knowledge of the Reality. It is full of supreme bliss.

Though full of sins, one who is ever intent on hearing the meaning of the Gita, goes to the kingdom of God and rejoices with Lord Vishnu.

By repeated study of the Gita, he attains liberation. Uttering the word Gita at the time of death, a person attains liberation.  <<More>>

Lord Sri Dattatreya - "The Greatest of Avadhuta"
  Dattatreya Jayanti ( December 12, 2008)

Lord Sri Dattatreya - "He was a supreme Yogi. Like Dakshinamurti, He was the adi guru, the primal World Teacher. Contemplate His life. Meditate upon Him. Feel His divine presence. Evoke in your mind the sacred memory of Sati Anasuya and Atri Maharshi, the power of chastity, and divine grace in the form of Divinity taking birth at the earnest supplication and prayer of a heart filled with devotion. The earnest prayer of a heart filled with devotion never goes unanswered or unfulfilled. This is what the advent, the avatara of Dattatreya represents or proves.-Swami Chidananda << More>>.

Higher Knowledge & Lesser Knowledge
Jijnasa means thirst for knowledge, a desire for knowledge. Our ancients were men of brahma-jnana (direct knowledge of Brahman). They were brahma-jnanis, atma-jnanis, they had knowledge. Modern scientists, physicists, mathematicians, nuclear physicists, they also have knowledge. They are also jnanis. But then, what is the difference?

Our ancient jnanis realised the oneness of all existence, that life is one: Isavasyamidam sarvam yat kimcha jagatyam jagat (All this, whatsoever in this universe moves (or moves not) is indwelt by the Lord). Therefore, to harm anyone is to harm yourself. Recognising this oneness of life, the immanence of the one hidden Spirit in all things that exist, they realised the sanctity of all life. So they declared ahimsa paramo dharmah (non-violence is the highest duty). Not to injure anyone, not to harm anyone, not to hurt anyone, is the supreme good, supreme law. And therefore their prayer was lokah samastah sukhino bhavantu (may all beings be happy), sarvesham svastir-bhavatu (may auspiciousness befall all beings). And they lived in order to fulfil this prayer sarvabhutahiteratah (engaged in the welfare of all beings)—living only to constantly work for the good of all, the happiness of all, the auspiciousness and blessedness of all. They lived to benefit life around them. Their life, therefore, was a source of satyam, sivam, sundaram—all that is true, all that is good and auspicious, all that is beautiful—to life around them.- Swami Chidananda .................. << More>>

Health Topics from "Yoga & Health" by Swami Adhyatmananda

Depression

"Fire cannot be separated from its nature of burning. Similarly mind cannot be separated from its nature of sustaining ups and down. This process of likes and dislikes, this is good and that is bad vacillates the mind. This pendulum like movement is the cause of unrest and disquiet. If such problems do  arise, the mind will feel powerless."....

"The entire nature is made up of three qualities of Sattva, Rajas and Tamas (purity, activity and ignorance). The result of quality of activity is lust and anger, even a very powerful man may also fall a prey to lust and anger. Very big personalities are also caught up in the square of money, women, fame and reputation. When a person is overwhelmed by happiness, depression results."....

"Depressed patient can perform all the flexibility exercises and all the Asanas. However, Suryanamaskara, Sravangasana, Matsyasana, Halasana, Vajrasana, Ushtrasana, Shavasana and practice of Pranayama and meditation will clear all depression and will surely enlighten the life by rejuvenation and lightening the lamp of hopeful life."<< More>>
